North Meridian may be small, but its homeowners are actively passionate about the community. Organizations such as the Meridian Street Foundation, a non-profit founded back in 1960, aim to preserve the area's historic, scenic, and aesthetic character, possibly by having the neighborhood listed as an official historic district. The area's beauty is recognized by outsiders as well: Forbes recently included North Meridian Street on its list of the ten prettiest neighborhoods in America.
The district's cultural contributions extend well beyond architecture. One of the street's most famous houses, 4270 N. Meridian, was once home to Booth Tarkington, the beloved Hoosier author who brought home the Pulitzer twice. Many of his novels were based on observations of his wealthy neighbors in their beautiful homes, which he described as "picture book houses." Other famous residents include actress Frances Farmer, cartoonist Kin Hubbard, and pharmaceutical industrialist Josiah Lilly. The Indiana Governor's Residence, constructed in 1928, is also located on North Meridian.
