Mile Square, Indianapolis Homes for Sale
Though Indianapolis may be better known as the Circle City, the downtown area started out simply as Mile Square. Surveyor Alexander Ralston was commissioned in 1821 to design the plat of land between North, South, East, and West Streets (his previous credits included assisting Pierre L'Enfant with the design of Washington, D.C.). Ralston was responsible for Indy's iconic central circle, initially intended for the governor's house but now the site of the Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument. He also came up with the diagonal avenues of Massachusetts, Virginia, Kentucky, and Indiana, which once connected all the corners of Mile Square to what is now Monument Circle.

Despite his experience and vision, Ralston did not have high hopes for Indianapolis. He was originally tasked with mapping a four-mile plat, but doubted the city would ever reach such a size. In the almost 200 years since, Indianapolis has grown to 372 square miles—but the original Mile Square still marks the historical, cultural, and economic center of the city.
Today, most Mile Square residents live in condominiums or apartments rather than single-family houses. In 1983, 36 apartment buildings—all of which date back to the period of 1890-1930, when Indianapolis experienced its most significant growth—were added to the National Register of Historic Places.
Indianapolis is second only to Washington, D.C. in its number of war monuments, most of them located within Mile Square. These monuments honor the veterans of the Civil War, World War I, World War II, Korea, Vietnam, and most recently the victims of 9/11. Many of these memorials were built from Indiana limestone.

Mile Square was created not just to memorialize, but also to thrive and grow. While not particularly known as a skyscraper city, all of Indy's tallest buildings are centralized downtown. Mile Square also encompasses the Wholesale District (bounded by Capitol, Delaware, Washington, and South), a unique blend of historic architecture and new construction. The Wholesale District contains Circle Centre Mall, the Bankers Life Fieldhouse (where the Pacers and Fever play), and several prestigious hotels and restaurants.
