Return to "Homes for Sale in Indianapolis Historic Districts"
Mapleton-Fall Creek is comprised of 3 smaller neighborhoods, including historic Meridian Park, The Watson-McCord Neighborhood, and Birchwood Neighbors. Here, you'll find many amenities like bike trails, parks, schools, grocery stores, restaurants, and churches. Mapleton-Fall Creek is also home to many beautiful turn-of-the-century homes.
Like much of Indianapolis, the area was farm land until the turn of the century when a new bridge over Fall Creek, and the invention of the automobile, made commuting downtown quicker and easier. Distanced from the noise and smoke of the city, the neighborhood quickly supplanted Woodruff Place and Irvington as the most exclusive and fashionable place to live.
The northern part of the neighborhood was originally known as "Sugar Grove," presumably for the many maple trees that grew here. It was rechristened "Mapleton" in the 1850's. In the 1860s, the city's street car railway was extended to Crown Hill Cemetery, connecting Mapleton to Indianapolis. By then, the area had already become a popular watering place for horses traveling between Broad Ripple and Indianapolis. The Indiana State Fairgrounds moved here from Herron-Morton in 1891.
"Historic Meridian Park," as it's now known, flourished in the 1890's as affluent Indianapolis families built summer homes there. These newcomers hired prominent local architects to build Tudor Revival and Colonial Revival mansions, and luxury apartment buildings, such as Buckingham and the Hudson Arms along Meridian Street. By 1915, 78 new homes had been built along Meridian Street between Fall Creek and Maple Road.
Soon, the area east of Meridian grew as businesses and services moved into the area to meet the needs of its new upscale residents. Large Arts and Crafts-style homes sprung up on streets to the east, and the city extended water and sewage lines to its new "suburb" in 1914. Schools, post offices, and other amenities followed.
Churches also responded to the population shift. The old "Sugar Grove Mission" (Mapleton Methodist Church) built a larger building, and large city congregations like the Third Presbyterian, followed their members into the neighborhood. Other congregations, like Trinity Episcopal, Our Redeemer Lutheran, and North Methodist churches were established by newcomers to the area.
From the 1950s into the '80s, the neighborhood, like many inner-city areas in the nation, experienced a period of economic decline. Homes were abandoned and fell into disrepair, businesses moved out of the area, crime rates rose, and home ownership declined.
Today, however, thanks to the dedicaton of active neighborhood associations, area churches, and the Mapleton-Fall Creek Devlopment Corporation, a renaissance has taken root here. Today, Mapleton-Fall Creek is a neighborhood of opportunity. The process of gentrification has begun to attract professionals who take advantage of the neighborhood's character, housing stock, and proximity to downtown Indianapolis.
Mapleton-Fall Creek is replete with opportunity and burgeoning redevelopment plans. There are many opportunities to obtain affordable homes of quality and to make a difference to the future, while honoring the past. As with Lockerbie and Old Northside, the opportunity in this area is ripe and attractive. In many cases, the renovations have already been completed. There are many homes that have been renovated and await new owners.
